ABVP Volunteer Opportunities ONLINE go

ABVP depends on Diplomates to keep the organization moving forward, and more than 50% of Diplomates are actively involved in ABVP. Volunteer opportunities are numerous and many count toward recertification credit.

If you are interested in volunteering, please return this formpdf to ABVP by fax to 615/254-7047; mail to 618 Church Street, Suite 220, Nashville, TN 37219 or e-mail your interests to abvp@xmi-amc.com. You may also submit this form online.

MENTORING:

The process of application, credentialing and examination can be intimidating, and ABVP recognizes the need to provide individual assistance to veterinarians aspiring to become Diplomates. Mentors are expected to provide information, encouragement, expertise and coaching to applicants and candidates, in order to facilitate their successful completion of the ABVP certification process. Mentors should be thoroughly familiar with the ABVP Applicant Handbook, keep abreast of information on the web site, and be familiar with any upcoming ABVP-sponsored seminars specific to the relevant practice category. There is no formal training for mentors.

REVIEWING CASE REPORTS:

With growing number of applications each year, Diplomates are needed to review case reports as part of the Credentials Committee . Several hours of time are involved between February 15 and April 15 when Reviewers read, score, and provide comments on case reports (without knowledge of authors.) Reviewers typically don't review more than 10 case reports per year. A three-year commitment is desirable, if possible. Ten (10) credits toward recertification are given for each case report graded.

GRADING ITEMS:

Diplomates write exam items for credit toward recertification. All items submitted must be graded by two Diplomates trained in Item development who then collaborate on a common score. Graders score items, check references, rubric items, and edit accepted items as needed. ABVP provides training via the web (for a fee) or at the Practitioner's Symposium for those volunteering to grade. Graders are given one (1) credit per item graded toward their own recertification.

GRADE INTERPRETIVE SUMMARIES:

Diplomates write interpretive summaries for credit toward recertification. Each summary is scored on the following criteria. 1) demonstrates the ability to practice ABVP-caliber veterinary medicine/ surgery, 2) demonstrates the range and depth of the Diplomate's clinical expertise, 3) demonstrates ability to clearly communicate in a professional style with good spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Credit toward recertification is given to those grading summaries.
