CONTEST DETAILS

The 2010-11 Student Case Report Contest is open to all current veterinary students. This year’s contest is divided into two categories – (1) companion animal (including equine) and (2) food animal species. The 1st place winner in each category will receive $800 and a stipend up to $1100 to attend the annual ABVP Symposium to receive his/her award. * The 2nd place winner in each category will receive $400 and the 3rd place winners will receive $200.

Case Report Format:

Title

Author’s Name and College Address: You must be the first author.

Introduction: This should state the purpose of the report, a brief review of the problem and a literature review that is pertinent and current.

Clinical Report: This should include the history, the physical findings, the diagnostic methods and results (e.g. laboratory and radiological finding(s), differential diagnoses, treatment and results, necropsy findings (when appropriate), final diagnoses and outcome of case(s).

Discussion: This part of the manuscript should be subjective. Here the author critiques the clinical report and the management of the problem. This is different from the clinical report, in which the clinical findings are objective. No new information should be added in the discussion.

Summary: In 150 words or less, the author should provide an interpretive summary of the manuscript.

References: References should be listed in order of citation in the text.

Submission Guidelines:
Case reports and supporting illustrations should be submitted on a CD using Microsoft Word 98 or higher. All tabular data should be on a separate sheet with an appropriate legend. All images should be submitted in a JPEG format accompanied with the appropriate legend corresponding with the case report. Supporting illustrations (e.g. radiographs, photographs, electrocardiograms, line drawings, etc.) must be submitted in high quality computer-generated graphics.

For all other questions pertaining to case report format and structure, please see the Case Reports link and download the Applicant Handbook (requires Adobe Acrobat). Case reports are expected to be written according to ABVP guidelines as noted in the Applicant Handbook.

Case reports should include complete and appropriate diagnostic workups and medical and/or surgical managements. The manuscript should reflect your veterinary expertise, demonstrate your ability to use medical principles in the diagnosis and treatment of animals, and display your ability to communicate medical observations and data in an organized manner. Manuscripts which make a contribution to or support the existing literature are encouraged. Many students will not have experience as authors and are encouraged to consult someone with experience in publishing in refereed journals; however, any assistance should pertain to style rather than content.

Previously published case reports (if you were first author) may be submitted if published within the last three (3) years.

The ABVP Student Case Report Committee will review the manuscripts according to the same guidelines used to evaluate actual ABVP applicants. All participants will be notified by mail of the results no later than December 31, 2010.

Case report entries should be mailed to the address below and be postmarked no later than November 15, 2010.
