Addendum—Equipment and Facilities

Avian Practice

 

A. Physical Facilities

1. Examination rooms must be sufficient in number and size to accommodate the caseload.

2. Treatment areas and areas for intensive care, special procedures, isolation, and good nursing care must be available.

3. Surgical suites must be sufficient in number and size to accommodate caseload.

4. Necropsy space must be available for routine post-mortem examination.

 

B. Equipment

1. Radiology - A 300 MA 125 KVP radiograph machine is a minimum.

2. Anesthesia equipment - Isoflurane system with adequate scavenging equipment is mandatory.

3. Routine monitoring of surgical and intensive care patients using respiratory and cardiac monitors is required.

4. ICU - Incubator with heat control, oxygen cage.

5. Ophthalmologic equipment sufficient for current standards of practice is required.

6. Orthopedic instrumentation must be appropriate for the management of all orthopedic cases.

7. Electrocardiogram, ultrasound, electrosurgery unit, and fiberoptic endoscopy are required.

8. Rapid hematology, chemistry, and microbiologic tests service must be available.

9. Professional and ancillary staff must be adequate to manage the caseload.

10. Records - A system of keeping records must be in place to ensure adequate documentation and rapid retrieval of information about any patient or flock. The POMR system is recommended. The record system must support population-based analysis.
