Examination for Recertification

Recertification by Specialty Examination
Each Diplomate has up to three (3) attempts to pass the Specialty Examination in his/her RVS (Recognized Veterinary Specialty), as long as the requirements are met in the 8th, 9th or 10th year of the certification period.

The Specialty Exam is comprised of written multiple-choice items with a stem and three (3) possible answers.  Only one (1) choice is correct and the other two (2) are distractors.  For most RVS’s there are three hundred (300) items.

Successful passing of the exam will extend certification by ten (10) years beyond the original expiration date.  Notification of the Diplomate’s intent to take the recertification examination, along with the fee, must be received in the ABVP office by September 1st of the year in which he/she plans to take the exam.

Information on where the examination will be administered, examination entrance cards, contingency plans, and notification of results can be found here.
