Canine & Feline Practice

Canine & feline practice certificationMany veterinarians treat both dogs and cats in their practices and some have demonstrated advanced expertise by becoming board-certified specialists in the ABVP category of Canine & Feline Practice. Through a rigorous credentialing and examination process, these veterinarians have shown a mastery of up-to-date clinical medicine and surgery as well as the ability to communicate in a professional and scientific manner. By achieving ABVP certification, practitioners become Diplomates and are fully recognized as specialists under the American Board of Veterinary Specialties, American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

The Canine & Feline Practice category is the largest of ABVP’s nine categories, with over 400 veterinarians. Most are in private practice, but a growing number can be found in academia, industry, uniformed services and other career fields. Diplomates often have advanced equipment and training in their practices to provide the highest-quality care for dogs and cats. Some accept referrals of difficult cases from their colleagues. Diplomates are often featured speakers at continuing education conferences, sharing their knowledge and expertise. A number of C/F specialists participate in the online community known as VIN (Veterinary Information Network). Diplomates can also be found serving the profession in organizations such as state associations and the national AVMA, including a past president.

A list of current Diplomates willing to serve as mentors through the certification process is also available.
